KARTOFLE

Although of American origin, potatoes have long been a Polish dietary mainstay; they are also known as ziemniaki (esp. in the Kraków region), grule (in the Tatra Moutnains) and pyrki (in Wielkopolska, the Poznań region). Most often Polish cooks serve potatoes boiled or plain-mashed.
